Zoo and Field Equipment for the Herpetologist

MATERIALS OF CONSTRUCTION

FOR HOOKS

Titanium [Ti] * (spacecraft grade) is the metal recommended for the most demanding field and zoo conditions. Weighing only about half as much as the stainless steels, it is strong, light, scratch resistant and highly corrosion resistant. Titanium has proven to be the best hook metal for all field hooks, most standard zoo hooks, and fixed length boa hooks.

Aluminum [AI] (spacecraft grade) is a metal suitable for moderate use both in the zoo and in the field. Although less scratch resistant and more flexible than titanium, aluminum is still very useful when a lighter or lower cost hook is required. Aluminum has proven to be the best hook metal for cage hooks and mini hooks.

Polycarbonate Plastic [PI] (spacecraft grade) is a very flexible ultra-lightweight material suitable for light duty cage use. It should not be used to pick up specimens weighing more than about 500 grams (1 pound) nor to pin specimens. The flexibility of this material greatly reduces the possibility of specimen injury or cage glass breakage. However, the plastic hook must never be exposed to organic solvents as it may dissolve or slowly crystallize and crack. Polycarbonate plastic is available only for cage hooks.

Special or Composite Materials. We have found that titanium, aluminum and polycarbonate plastic fulfill over 99% of all hook material requirements. Special materials such as magnesium, stainless steel and beryllium are available. Composite materials such as highly abrasion resistant nylon coated over metal hooks (to prevent marking of fiberglass cages) are also available. Write or e-mail for a quotation if you require one of these special or composite hooks.

FOR SHAFTS

Tempered Anodized Aluminum has proven to be the best lightweight shaft metal available at moderate cost. The tempering process greatly reduces the probability of the shaft bending permanently under load and the anodizing makes the surface highly corrosion resistant. Even when the anodized surface is abraded, protective oxidation forms on the surface of the aluminum to partially inhibit corrosion.

Tempered anodized aluminum is available in: 1) tapered shafts rated for a 15-pound lift test [XAl] and 30-pound lift test [XXXAl] for field and zoo hooks; 2) tapered shafts [Al] not strength rated for cage hooks; 3) tubing [TAl] not tapered or strength rated for mini hooks.

Tempered Nickel-Chrome Plated Steel is a good shaft material that is less expensive and only slightly heavier than aluminum. However, severe abrasion may remove the electroplating causing rust and eventual failure if the abraded spots are not protected. Tempered nickel-chrome plated steel is available in: 1) tapered shafts rated for a 15-pound lift test [XFe-] and 30-pound lift test [XXXFe-] for field and zoo hooks; 2) tapered shafts [Fe-] not strength rated for cage hooks.

Special Shafts. A double shaft [DSAl-] feature is available consisting of a tempered steel shaft attached to the shank of the hook inside a tempered anodized aluminum shaft. This combination can withstand any weight that a man can lift at full cantilever. Double shafts are anodized blue for identification. Also available are lightweight shafts of highly corrosion resistant tempered titanium-stainless steel and ultra-lightweight shafts of graphite composite. Graphite shafts when combined with a suitable lightweight hook of plated magnesium or beryllium yields absolutely the fastest handling hook possible. Write for a quotation if you require a shaft of graphite or titanium-stainless steel.

FOR GRIPS

Long Grip The long grip [LG] is 1O 1/2 inches long, 3/4 inch thick at the center, 1 inch thick at the butt, is ribbed for positive orientation in the hand, and is made of a high friction cork-rubber compound.

Fabric Grip The fabric grip [FG] has all of the features of the long grip as well as having a fabric cord molded into the grip, which greatly increases the grip's general abrasion resistance and reduces the slipperiness of the grip when wet.

Short Grip The short grip [SG] is 4 1/4 inches long, has a diameter varying from 1 to 1 1/4 inches, is hand contour shaped, and is made of a high friction rubber compound. It is very useful on cage hooks as it provides a fixed distance between hook and grip to prevent the possibly dangerous habit of "choking up."

Plastic Grip The plastic grip [PG] is 3 1/2 inches long, has a diameter of 3/8 inch, and is made of lightweight vinyl. It is available only on the mini hooks.

Double Grips. The double grip [DG] consists of both a long grip on the butt of a shaft and a short grip on the shaft spaced 3 to 9 inches from the long grip towards the tip of the shaft. The spacing distance is proportional to the length of the shaft and is designed to optimize the handling characteristics of the hook for 1) close work by gripping only the front short grip, 2) maximum reach by gripping only the long grip, 3) maximum lift by placing one hand on each grip, 4) maximum lift by gripping the short grip in the hand and tucking the butt of the pole under that same arm thus leaving the other hand free.

HOOK SHAPES AND SIZES

Four basic hook shapes are offered in various sizes to satisfy practically any and all requirements for reptile handling. Each hook is smoothly finished and the toe polished to reduce the possibility of lacerating a specimen. The advantages and disadvantages of each hook shape are as follows.

RECURVE SHAPE - Regular Foot [No suffix] The most universal hook shape. May be used for reptile capture and pinning as well as moderate field use (with a titanium hook) on boards, rocks, etc. Two important advantages are 1) when a specimen is lifted it will slide into the throat of the hook, making the grip less likely to twist in the hand when maneuvering the specimen and 2) when the specimen is raised higher than the butt of the shaft the recurve reduces the probability of the specimen sliding down the shaft and onto the hand. Disadvantages are that it cannot easily be maneuvered into tight areas or corners and the long foot is fairly flexible thus allowing the toe to slip over large rocks or logs when the hook is used for pulling in the field. The regular foot is available in four throat sizes: [MINI] - 1 inch; [CAGE]- 2 inch; standard [No Suffix] -3 inch; [BOA]- 5 inch (all sizes are nominal).

SHORT FOOT [SF] The most popular zoo hook has all the advantages of the regular foot with the exception that it is not recommended for pinning as the foot is about 2 inches shorter than the regular recurve. Additional advantages are that it can be maneuvered into moderately tight corners and the foot is fairly rigid. Available in one throat size -[SF] - 3 inch.

L SHAPE [L] The traditional hook shape due to its simplicity. May be used for reptile capture and pinning as well as moderate field use (with a titanium hook) on boards, rocks, etc. An important advantage is that the toe of the hook can be easily maneuvered into the smallest openings and into the tightest corners of cages. The greatest disadvantages are that a shaft can easily twist under load and that a specimen can slide down the shaft when the hook is raised higher than the butt. Available in three foot lengths: [MINI L] - 2 inch; [CAGE L] - 21/2 inch; [L] - 4 inch.

"THE STUMP RIPPER" [COR] or [COL] A special FurMont design. Acclaimed by those who have used it as the finest heavy duty field hook in the world for reptile capture and pinning as well as stump ripping, board flipping, rock pulling, etc., in the same manner as a potato rake but it weighs one-fourth as much. The angle between the shank and the foot of the hook is less than 90 degrees, thus causing objects that are hooked and pulled to slide towards the shank where the hook is strongest. In addition to this slight "C" shape, the toe is offset bent, ground and polished so that the tip lies flat on the ground when held in the right hand and swept from right to left. This allows the tip to be easily slipped under a specimen. The offset tip also provides a slightly concave surface on the bottom of the foot thereby preventing specimens that are pinned from sliding out sideways from under the hook so readily. The "STUMP RIPER" Should never be used as a pry bar.

Available only with a 31/2 inch foot made of 5/16 inch titanium in a right handed [COR] and left handed [COL] version.

C SHAPE [C] A special FurMont design for log, rock, board, etc., pulling in the manner of a potato rake. It is not designed for specimen capture or pinning due to the strong "C" curvature that allows the entire toe to lie flat on the ground when the shaft is held at 45 degrees to the ground. Often used by salamander collectors. The toe can be pulled into small openings and objects that are pulled will slide towards the shank where the hook is strongest. The C hook should never be used as a pry bar. Available only with a 3 1/2-inch foot made of 5/16 inch titanium.

CUSTOM ETCHING OR ENGRAVING

This service is offered as a means of permanently identifying a hook as the property of a zoo, person, university etc. The identification is quite permanent and anyone attempting to remove the identification will have to do so by grinding, thus weakening or destroying the strength of the shaft. The format consists of 2 lines of information with no more than 24 letters and spaces per line, The cost is $2.00 per shaft for 1 to 4 hooks, for 5 hooks and above the service is free. Please note that steel shafts will be electroetched and that aluminum shafts are vibratory engraved by hand.

REPTILE BAG STIK

Flexible wands are inserted through slit holes in the hem to hold the nylon bag open. The bottom edge will lie flat on the ground or conform to an irregular surface, allowing the specimen to be chased into the bag or picked up with a hook and dropped into the bag. The bag is then spun shut, slipped off the wands, and tied off. A new bag can then be put on the wands. The bag opening is easily adjusted by a set screw or thumb screw to face in any desired direction. The wands are demountable and/or replaceable by means of thumb screws.
